A Non-Drug, Non Invasive FDA-Approved Breakthrough for Depression Relief

12 months after receiving Neurostar TMS Therapy 83% patients reported continued relief from depression and 62% experienced complete remission of depression.

How Does TMS Work?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. NeuroStar® TMS system delivers 3,000 magnetic pulses in 19 minutes to the left prefrontal cortex, an underactive area in individuals with depression. These pulses reawaken neural pathways that regulate emotions, cognition and motivation. This process improves brain function over time without medication, sedation, or surgery.

TMS is FDA approved non-drug option to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and adolescents 15 years and older, who haven’t responded well to antidepressants and psychotherapy. It’s also approved for treatment resistant anxious depression and  obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If you’ve tried medications or therapy with limited success, transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy may offer the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.

Is TMS Right for Me?

The Checklist

If you’re living with depression that just won’t lift despite trying therapy or medications, you’re not alone. TMS could be a fit for you if any of the following sound familiar:

Check if you qualify for TMS depression treatment

The rapidly pulsing magnetic fields that are generated by the NeuroStar© TMS device go directly through the hair, scalp and skull and create small electric currents in the area of the brain directly under the treatment coil. The electric currents created in the brain make nerve cells in that region become active and affect other nerve cells deep in the brain that are involved in mood. During a TMS session, you’ll sit back in a comfortable chair while a magnetic coil is placed against the side of your head. This coil delivers gentle, targeted magnetic pulses to specific areas of your brain that help regulate mood. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp, but it’s not painful. The session lasts 20 minutes, and there’s no need for sedation or recovery time.

TMS isn’t painful, though some people do feel a bit of discomfort on the scalp where the coil is placed. That sensation usually fades after the first few sessions as your body adjusts. Most patients say the tapping feels strange at first but not uncomfortable enough to stop treatment.

TMS has no side effects like what you experience with antidepressant medications. The most common side effects are transient like mild scalp discomfort or a light headache, especially in the beginning. Some people report twitching around the eyes or face, but these effects are temporary and usually go away quickly. There are no effects on memory, cognition,  sleep, or alertness.

TMS sessions are always overseen by a trained and certified technician. At Kalamazoo TMS, our team has been professionally trained and certified by NeuroStar®, the leader in TMS technology. A staff member monitors you throughout the session to make sure you’re safe and comfortable.

Many insurance providers cover TMS if you’ve tried other treatments first, like antidepressants or therapy, and haven’t had success. We work with most major insurers including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority Health, Aetna, and others. Our TMS coordinator will check your benefits, handle the paperwork, and keep you updated every step of the way. If you don’t have coverage, we offer self-pay plans to help make treatment more affordable.

Each TMS session takes about 20 to 40 minutes. You’ll come in five days a week for six weeks, followed by a few tapering sessions over week 31st to 36th weeks. The full course includes around 36 treatments in total.

Most patients relax and watch TV or listen to music. You can bring your own shows or playlists too. Some people read, some just rest quietly and enjoys the beautiful view of Portage Creek from panoramic windows in every room. It’s your time to take a break while the treatment does its work.

Yes, you can. TMS doesn’t affect your memory, alertness, or ability to function. You can drive, go to work, run errands, or do whatever’s next on your schedule.

Many people feel lasting improvement after just one round of TMS. But if symptoms come back months or years later, most insurances pay for it again if you had good outcome after first TMS course. Some patients who responded well choose to do occasional booster sessions. These are usually spaced out, like once a month, and they’re designed to help maintain the progress you made. Booster sessions aren’t covered by insurance, so we’ll walk you through the options if you need them.
