Meet the People Behind the Person-Centered Care

At Kalamazoo TMS & Behavioral Health, healing starts with connections. Our team blends deep expertise with heartfelt compassion to make sure every patient feels seen, respected, and supported. Our patient-centered care starts from when patient is received at reception with warmth and kindness, receives services in a soothing and caring environment and feels deeply heard and emotionally supported by providers.  Get to know the people who make our practice what it is and why they’ve dedicated their lives to mental wellness.

Dr. Ruqiya Shama Tareen

MD, MBBS, DDSc, DABPN, FACLP

A Leader in Whole-Person Psychiatry

Dr. Tareen’s interest in psychiatry began during her dermatology training, where she saw firsthand how emotional distress could manifest through the skin. That insight sparked a lifelong commitment to treating the mind-body connection with patient  care, research, and innovation.

A double Board-Certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, Dr. Tareen is looking at psychiatric care in a different way. Her 20 plus years in treating patients in office and in general hospital as an expert psychopharmacologist guides her to find many ways to help patients with different combinations of medications along with utilizing psychotherapy to enhance patient’s response to medications. She also has keen interest in neuropsychiatry and offer various tests to clarify diagnosis so that she can provide more targeted treatment.

Her main area of focus is to find innovative ways to help patients who has not responded to combination of medications and psychotherapy. This is where her interest in interventional psychiatry started, initially with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS therapy) in 2010 and later on in Ketamine infusions and Esketamine nasal spray as a way to improve quality of life of treatment resistant depression.

She is nationally and internationally recognized for her research, publications, presentations, and advocacy in women’s behavioral health, psychodermatology, and somatic symptom disorders.
